It’s always a busy week for our new SHEQ Manager James Cousins on the farm in Murrow and this week is no different except it is Farm Safety Week and he wants to make sure everyone gets involved.
He said:
Having only worked in a farm environment for the last five weeks hearing about Farm Safety Week was something I was excited to get behind and really push out among the team at Somerset Farm and the wider Adapt Biogas staff.
Being able to create a campaign to promote farm safety was a great way for me to learn about the risks associated with working on farm as well as being able to guide and train others in farm safety.
During the week, James will be making sure everyone is aware of the safety measures that will be shared far and wide to show support for Farm Safety Week. Activities such as a NEW Toolbox Talk for all staff on farm safety, farm safety leaflets displayed in all offices and communal areas and two random safety surveys being conducted by James. We are confident everyone will pass with flying colours.
The end of the week be completed with a farm safety-based quiz for all staff with a small prize on offer!
Of course, these are all specific activities to show our support for the Farm Safety Week, but safety on the farm is always in our teams mind to make sure it is a safe place to work.
For an industry so central to strengthening food security and growing the economy, those who work in farming are vulnerable. New figures released by the HSE show that farming continues to have the poorest safety record of any occupation with 27 people losing their lives on GB farms in 2023/24.
This annual campaign is one way to highlight issues, but no one should be complacent.
We will let you know how it goes.
